Additional Details

A fascinating didactic map reflecting the shifting borders and archaic topography that characterized our understanding of South America in the mid-19th century. Northern South America is comprised of the following states: New Granada, Caraccas, New Cumana or Spanish Guiana, Dutch Guiana, French Guiana, and Portuguese Guiana. Central South America is dominated by Amazonia and Paraguay, with Brazil in much-reduced stature along the Atlantic coast. The fabled Lake Parime is still shown, here labeled "L Parma".
